Kimi no Na wa / Your name

Went to Toho cinema in Umeda to watch Kimi no na wa. First off, this anime like all Shinkai Makoto anime is stunning to look at. It's worth watching just for the art and animation alone. However, it is also the first Shinkai anime with an actual exciting plot!

The story starts off as your typical body changing comedy between a city guy and country girl before the twist and the exciting ending.

Kimi no na wa reminds me very much of The Girl who Leapt through Time. I would rate it very good, almost must watch. For the love of all that is holy, please do not remake this into live action!

Saijo and Osaka

Met up with bframe for some yakitori and exchanging of gifts. Hope he's enjoying the 4TB of goodness I passed him.

The Yamanote Line is getting a new station. They haven't figured out a name yet.

After checking out in Saijo, I waited for an hour for Yoroshiku to open. Frame says it's the best ramen is Saijo. I got really excited to see that its thick tonkotsu fish tsukemen.

One of my favorite ramen places is Ittou in Shin Koiwa which specialises in the same exact ramen.

I am sorry Saijo, but Yoroshiku is very pedestrian. The soup and hand made noodles feel very lacking.

Took the Shinkansen back to Osaka and of course I had to get some horumon tempura!

Went to Kyobashi to meet up with Yukimi. Looks like Odaiba is not the only place with a statue of liberty.

Not my first time in Kyobashi but it's the first time I got to walk around. It reminds me of Kumamoto with how compact and dirty it is with plenty of night life activities to do including a nurse uniform girls' bar.

High grade mouth watering karubi.

Can't remember the name of this horumon but it didn't taste good. Made me appreciate how good Yakiniku Hiro in Kyoto was. The original plan was to Yakiniku in Fukushima and then go drinking At Hakushe. Oh well, there's always next time.

Yasube-e in Shinjuku and back to Nakano, Tokyo

For the first time, I am staying in Nakano which is on the west side of Tokyo. I am near blind drunk so please forgive my more than usual mistakes. One of the main reasons for staying in Nakano which is far from my usua drinking holr in Shin Koiwa is so I can eat Butayarou everyday.

Butatariu's shut down days for September.

Omiage from Kokoro chan. She just quit Hotaru and moved to Nagoya. She came back to Tokyo on Thursday so I had to go Shin Koiwa to meet her.

Tried of tsukemen Yasube-e in Shinjuku because the line at Fuunji was at least 45 minutes.

I have to say Yasu-be is pretty good. It's not to tonkotsu but the noodles and soup are pretty good. I wouldn't mind going there again.

Spent Friday night at this anisong bar in Nakano. The impressive thing for me was the existence of cute anime fangirls. As in young females wearing cosplay like clothing coming to a karaoke bar to sing Idolmaster songs.

There's not much talking going on because the girls who work at the bar spend their time cheering, shaking the tambourine and making sure the karaoke queue runs smoothly. Like when you get to the refrain part of your song, they get down on their knees and do that upwards tambourine shake.

Everybody has to stand on the stage to sing. I started with Ryu ga Gotoku songs but they were short and only one other person knew them. Not as fun as singing Go My Way and the whole place doing the chants.

The one real minus for me is no smoking inside. I'd imagine its to make it appealing to female customers.

This is my second Hatsune Miku concert since the Kansai one two years ago.

Going down escalator to exhibition session.

All the Magical Mirai posters.

What I wish my bedroom looked like.

Afternoon of first day and XL of the grey shirt already sold out.

Hello legs, I mean racing car.

Miku probably dead from the heat of being in a car too long.

Such a colourful car.

Wall for fans to draw on.

Come back Miku dayo!

I didn't try the PLaystation VR because there was a raffle and then you still had to queue up. I did try HTC Hive in Akihabara and it was underwhelming.

I am starting to get tempted to buy a dolfie.

The band started playing Guren no Yumiya and people started flocking and they ended with Senbinzakura which was not sung during the concert. The violin girl is super cute.

Lining up to go to the concert.

View from my seat. There was this uber annoying Taiwan or China guy next to me who kept checking his phone all the time. If there is any reason for justifiable homocide it is someone playing with his phone during a concert.

The crowd after the concert.

Sweets Paradise X Berserk at Yokohama

Huge thanks to Awolcosmonaut on the Berserk Reddit for writing about this.

It's being held in Yokohama until the 25th and then moves to Shijokawaramachi next month. You can find the information here:
http://www.sweets-paradise.jp/news/2016/09/post-148.html

The Sweets Paradise is located on the second floor of the Vivre building 5 minutes walk from the West exit of Yokohama station.

This is the second time I've been to Sweets Paradise for an event. The first one was for Ryu ga Gotoku.

Basically you get a ticket from the vending machine, it's 2250 yen or something like that and you can order one food and one drink. There is a time limit but during that time, you can eat or drink from the buffet as well.

Now that The Last Guardian has been delayed, it looks like Berserk is my game for October, not that I am expecting much from it. I'm pretty sure the PS2 game will still be the best.

I ordered Puck for coffee instead of the brand. Puck doesn't look happy.

Berserker armour Guts tastes as bad as it looks.

Standing guts 2D thingie.

Guts t-shirt. They are all one size and I'm pretty sure they are too small for me but I need to support the series.

Brand t-shirt.

No time to blog but I just got the grand prize for this trip, two bottles of Yamazaki 12! Harari's mama got it for me for 7500 each from a contact. They are very hard to find and I've got an old friend who is coming to town soon to help me finish them off.

Very, very lucky to run into Nagoshi Toshihiro, general producer of Ryu ga Gotoku/Yakuza series. His personal assistant who took the picture was very hot.
Ran into Momochi and Chocoblanka on the way back. Should have asked her to join in the picture.

Started waiting in line at 8am but I was too late....

.. To get the Ryu ga Gotoku ring. :( Nooooooo.

A bit of reprieve from the heat while waiting for near 3 hours.

Eagerly awaiting RGG6 more for the story rather than gameplay.

What would Tokyo Game Show be without Ryu ga Gotoku ladies?

A lot more pictures to come. I am just so dead tired.

Went out for dinner with the Hotaru regulars. Glad Yuni-chan was able to join us in the end.

It was Shimizu-Sam's farewell dinner and it just happened to coincide with my last day.

I had just ever-ate at a yakiniku the day before and now I get to stuff my face with yakitori. :)

Too bad Shota-san couldn't join us. He stayed until close the day before and said he was not feeling well. Mama actually paid for dinner.

Shin Gojira

Saw Shin Gojira at Wald 9 in Shinjuku. The movie was directed by Anno Hideaki of Evangelion fame.

First off the movie starts off super talky as we are introduced to too many characters who talk too fast. Something weird starts appearing in Tokyo harbour and the government makes some mistakes in dealing with the creature. I found myself starting to fall asleep during the first half.

When we first see Gojira, he is not the Gojira we know but he slowly evolves and possesses the most bullshit anti missile weapon ever.

We get to see lots and lots of disaster porn happening to lots of Tokyo land marks. The CG is cheesy bad but it's all fun. I quite enjoyed the second half of destruction.

However, there is on thing that really bothered me and that was Ishihara Satomi as the half Japanese politician representing the U.S.

Satomi's face is all over the Japan, especially on the trains as the face of Aeon (pronounced Eon) this English language school and her English in this movie is so laughably incomprehensible. She makes Watanabe Ken sound like the most proficient English speaker ever.

Her character is so annoying and she is so miscast and has absolutely no gravitas. The only thing she has is her lips. Seriously, who decided she could make a credible American politician?

Fun and destruction but I can't forgive Satomi's casting. Gojira's T-Rex arms didn't bother me so much. The movie is very nationalistic but not much more than any Michael Bay film. Watchable.

Abura chashuu from Ittou in Shin Koiwa. Omfg, me so hungry.

Tamagata ramen in Yokohama. Not bad.

Crappy generic tonkotsu from Higashi Koenji.

Kokolo-Chan's moved to Fukuoka but luckily she was back in Tokyo for en Exile concert and we managed to catch up twice. There are two things I remember:

1) I told her I was going to the Tokyo Gemu Show and she looked at me with a puzzled face and asked, "Where is the Tokyo Kemusho (prison)?"

2) We've previosly gotten 86.9 points at karaoke singing together and we finally broke 87 points! I've got two songs to my name in Hatoru's record books. Her singing is so good.

Queue for Persona 5 on launch day.

Butcher's Meat Takechi in Shin Koiwa. The karubi is not bad.

Went with Satomi to Yakiniku Futago in Omiya. This is called the Kuroge wagyu hamideru karubi.

I forgot what this is but I'm sure it tasted great.

The shops are right in Marui (otherwise known as 0101) in Shibuya. Production I.G is of course the super talented house that animated Ghost in the Shell and Psycho Pass.

I don't really care about One Piece.

I did try out the VR thing and it was ok.

I really wanted that Psycho Pass over 900 t-shirt but I've got way too many shirts already.

I had just watched A Living Promise / Jinsei no Yakusoku and was pleasantly surprised to see a yatai in Nakano.

The movie is available at doramax265 and has not been subbed to my knowledge. I don't think its on avistaz. Highly recommended movie.

They started at the south exit of Nakano station.

And moved south.

The yatais are a lot smaller than the one from A Living Promise but it brought great memories from the movie.

Afterwards there was a taiko performance at the north exit. Really awesome.

The taxi driver guy in the middle turns out to be buchou / boss of the organisation and he gave a short speech. It was surreal because of watching so many doramas and movies about shopping area organisations and everyone was shouting buchou!!!! there was a JR! chant which I assume is his nickname.

All three yatais got together for a dance/shout off...

And then headed north up Nakano broadway. I miss Nakano. The good thing about Nakano is that its within walking distance to Koenji which has interesting nightlife as well. :)

Sakuraba Nanami poster. It says I like judicial clerks. Yes the judicial clerk association of Japan hired Sakuraba Nanami for this.

Thanks to bframe for getting the two posters for me. Maybe judicial clerks play some special role in Japan.

My favorite shirt from this trip. Should have gotten the Megadrive and Dreamcast ones but I have way too many shirts. Now I regret not buying because how many shirts have the Sega logo?

Saturn controller at the back.

My second favorite shirt because its a Reinhard von Lohengramm shirt! Need more Legend of Galactic Heroes goods. There was a Rossen Ritter shirt as well which I didn't get.

You can't watch anime and not know this shirt.

I like the Sonic at the back.

Really crappy Berserk shirt. Can't even tell its Guts.

Shibuya with Tachikomas from the Production I.G store.

Got a new 3DS, Xenoblade, Uppers and Rose and the old Castle of Twilight for the Vita. No second hand cause I want to support the developer.

Genie Ibun Roku aka Tokyo Mirage Sessions. Second hand cause it was too cheap to ignore.

Root Letter Premium Edition. I played the PS4 demo and quite enjoyed it.

Ryu ga Gotoku fan from TGS.

Bigger battery for Wii U controller, USB Y cable to connect HDD to Wii U, USB C female port so I could connect my mp3 player to my phone, Ryu ga Gotoku badges and 20000 yen in PSN currency. I also got a usb to 3DS adapter but I can't find it atm.

5 reason Kenja no Ai might be this year's best jdorama

$
0
0

1) KENJA NO AI IS A VISUAL FEAST FOR THE EYES.

Jdoramas usually light everything up and look like a crappy soap opera. WOWOW and NHK shows usually have a grittier more movie like look. Ken no Ai reminds you that this is a visual medium and creates so many stunning images.

2) GREAT MOVIE LIKE SOUNDTRACK

I'm not talking about memorable tunes cause there are non in Kenja no Ai. I'm talking about how the music doesn't overpower the scenes but rather enhances them.

3) DARK STORY ABOUT REVENGE AND FRIENDSHIP.

Every single revelation instead of being just a twist for the sake of a twist adds another complicated layer to the relationship between Mayuk-chan and Yuri-chan.

4) ITS NOT A SHOW ABOUT HOW COMPLICATED AND SOMETIMES ILLOGICAL HUMAN RELATIONSHIPS ARE.

Sick of the 'hey let's just all get along and be nice to each other' jdoramas? Kenja no Ai is about how a lot of times in real life, we have to pretend to get along. My favourite character is Yuri-chan. She's the bad guy but I can't hate her because how damaged she is. Everyone in this show is kind of trapped by past sins and don't know how to set themselves free and instead smile and pretend to be happy while living with great burdens.

5) GREAT ACTING BY EVERYONE INVOLVED.

I was expecting to hate Naomi but I didn't mind his acting.

 WHAT I HATED

There is one thing I hate about Kenja no Ai and that is the fight scene in the last episode. The music and shot composition was great but the fight itself was so fake. It was like those sentai shows where the bad guys just throw themselves on the ground. How could the director be satisfied with that crappy performance. It felt like the two actors were so scared of physical contact and I'm not talking about the fake ass punching.

SUMMARY

I do not have enough superlatives to describe Kenja no Ai. I'm just sad that it so much better than most jdoramas but not many people have seen it. Definitely deserves to be subbed.

A Bride for Rip Van Winkle

Ah, Iwai Shunji. A very talented director who made a good movie (Love Letter), a good first episode to a dorama (April Story), overrated movie that put me to sleep (All About Lily Chou) and an acclaimed movie I can't remember anything about (Hana and Alice). Suffice to say, I'm not a big fan but his talent is undeniable so I went in with low expectations.

You can watch A Bride for Rip van Winkle as a movie or a dorama. They are both the same. I'd recommend watching it as a dorama because like all Iwai Shunji movies, it is slow as. Its still beautiful enough so that I didn't skip any scenes but it was a frustrating movie to watch because introduces interesting elements to the story such as the Noriko's Dinner Table like fake family substory but doesn't take them far enough. The most interesting character in the show is Ayano Gou's Amuro. I so wanted him to take centre stage in the movie but Iwai kept pushing him to the side and we got way too much Cocco.

Rip van Winkle is a movie where it takes a long time for the real story to be revealed but the journey should be a lot more fun. I kind of get in my head what Iwai Shunji wants to convey but this movie just lacks that playfulness to make it memorable. I was happiest watching this movie when two faces I know showed up for a cameo near the end. I can't say any more without spoiling the whole thing.

Iwai Shunji fans will probably eat this up. For me it was a movie that looked good but didn't entertain me. Meh.

Strange Freak Designs X Ryu ga Gotoku Majima Goro Hannya bracelet

I haven't watched anything for the past two weeks because of Persona 5. I'm pissed off at myself for not being to get the Ryu ga Gotoku ring at TGS. I should have pre-bought my ticket and lined up at 6.

Anyway, Ayako-san, who a I meet at the RGG X Sweets Paradise shop earlier this year brought this bracelet to my attention but I was hesitant to buy it because of the price. Having missed out on the ring, I finally decided to order the Majima bracelet from Rakuten. They didn't ship overseas so I had to use Tenso to redirect it.

The hannya is the tattoo from Majima's back. Especially after Ryu ga Gotoku/Yakuza Zero, he's become my favorite character.

Koekoi eps 4-12

I really enjoyed the first half of Koekoi. It was your typical high school shoujo manga style dorama but the paperbag head brought made it different enough to be fresh and I was looking forward to what Koekoi would do with it.

I was completely devastated when Karata Erika suddenly left the show. Romance doramas are about delaying the inevitable but making it fun and she and the President made it fun.

The second half of Koekoi descended into standard shoujo manga fare with everyone liking someone else and seemed to have no ideas on how to capitalise on Matsubara-kun's paper head.

The show added the super boring and unnecessary childhood friend. Karata Erika as the seemingly perfect student had much more potential because they could have played around with her keeping up appearances.

The only fun thing in the middle episodes was seeing Matsubara-kun in panic mode and act more like a real person instead of this rigid robot.

I basically watched the second half of Koekoi while playing my 3DS because its was so generic and predictable including the lines.

Good thing the episodes are only 20 minutes but they should have just reduced it to 10 episodes and cut out all the fat.

Ultimately Koekoi is an ok series that did not fulfill its potential and is best watched in the background.

Persona 5 review

$
0
0

Finally finished Persona 5 in 165 hours! I feel like a big weight has finally been lifted off my shoulders! Persona 5 is a dungeon crawling RPG about a group of high schoolers who can enter this parallel world and reform people whose desires have become warped. If I had to compare Persona 5 to any game, it would be Ryu ga Gotoku. RGG is an adult/Japan night life sim while Persona 5 is a high school simulation.

Let's get the good out of the way. The art style is great and the music is jamming, especially when they add lyrics to the main themes at the end. The relationship stories and dialogue are not far removed and do not contradict the main story like in Fire Emblem Fates. Its a huge pitfall of having an RPG where you can romance many characters.

The main story is actually pretty good. There are two very nice twists in the story and something unexpected happens near the end which says something interesting about society. The ending is really good. Morgana really grew and Ryuji is probably the most interesting among all the members because he actually behaves like teenager. With that said, Persona 5 has a huge Achilles's heel, namely pacing.

This game is super unnecessarily long. It just takes too long to progress through the co-operations/relationships and most of them are very straightforward and boring with tons and tons of text. There are some well written ones like Soujiro and Futaba most of them are just dry and not funny. I almost gave up on the game many times but as a Japanese study tool, Persona 5 has a lot more useful words and phrases compared to something like RGG so I persevered.

Don't get me started on Mementos which is this long side story dungeon that looks the same and just rehashes enemies to fight. Persona 5's greatest sin is that not one of the side stories are interesting nor funny. Most of them end up being similar to RGG in that its all about some scam. While RGG has many memorable side stories such as Be My Baby from RGG2, Persona 5 makes you sit through a mountain of dialogue to reach a predictable end fot the side stories. The writers did push themselves in a corner with the fact that you need to know someone's name in order to reform them which removes any potential who is the bad guy mysteries.

Its not all bad. The writing is a step above Sen no Kiseki series and its the first anime RPG in a long time I didn't feel like everyone was the same nice cardboard anime character with no personality.

Persona 5 is such a mixed bag for me. There are something I like and there are parts of it I really hated. If I could suggest a fix it would be to shorten and combine a lot of the co-operation stories and just and reduce the barriers for furthering co-operations. I think there's plenty of fat to cut to make it a lean and mean 100 hour game.

I should have played Tokyo Mirage Sessions (which is a similar game on the Wii U) instead because I've read that it's shorter and funnier. Persona fans will love the game and they know what they're getting into which is losing 4 weeks of your life to one game. If you value pacing like I do, I am Setsuna is a much better game.
